What a month, it was, November 2024!

I thought at the time that things would move forward from there, escalating into ever higher numbers of readers, and huge amounts of views of the individual articles.

That was what the let-me-tell-you-how people on Substack claimed, and they were good at posting similar graphs as mine, and various other types, showing how amazingly successful they were – “and you can become that too! (with some consistency)”.

Now, some of the people who started here at the same time as me has escalated way ahead of me. Some of those I have been following from when we both had 10 subscribers and no readers for our posts, they now have several times the subscribers as I have, and curves that beat mine in every respect.

So, I tend to claim that I can not show you how to become successful.

After that good month, it felt like I couldn’t catch the attention of people like in the beginning. Had it been on Facebook or another typical social medium, it would have been at that time that I should start paying for readers, to keep everything going and not get stuck on a plateau.

I made another Substack, the Turning Life, plus some business stacks, the latter meant to attract potential customers for my technical writing and data analyst services.

Turning Life never took off. You can see the curve for it here:

At most, it had something like 1/10 of the traffic from A Rich Life/All of Life (which changed name along the way).

Both stacks fell drastically in popularity in the beginning 2025, and as my life became difficult and I had to put my focus elsewhere, it was easy to run away from Substack for a while, not publishing anything there. And social media never fails on that point: going away for a while means that all is lost.

In June 2025, I was again very active, mostly with All of Life, but it was impossible to attract very much attention to anything I did.

And when I then announced that I would now close down, there were hardly anybody noticing it. Only the handful of hardcore supporters I had here, reacted to it at all.

Looking at the graphs, I realize that it hasn’t been a full year yet – one month is still missing. I think the tendency is clear, though: I have lost. If there ever was a competition about becoming popular on this platform, I wasn’t even in the room where the podium was. I guess you could say, i wasn’t even told when they would announce the winner on TV. That’s how far I was from winning.

And why do I care?

When I started, I had some thoughts about this being or becoming kind of a portfolio platform, to which I could direct anyone interested in hiring me for writing – then they could see for themselves what I was capable of, and decide if it was suitable for their business.

I lost that. Nobody ever looked at this place to see how I was writing. Nobody cared at all.

I also thought, like I had done previously with Medium, that there would be a chance, over time, to start earning a bit of money here. It is necessary to understand that I have a very small economy these days, trying to catch a few dollars here, a few euros there, all of it together now, for a long while, very far from what I need to pay the bills.

I lost that too. It turned out that anyone earning just a small amount of money have many more subscribers than I have, and also such subscribers who kind of adore them, see them as gurus or special talents. Often, the paying subscribers hope to get a little stardust on them by being near a successful Substack-owner.

And then, as it appeared to me that I couldn’t use this place as a reference of any kind, and I couldn’t earn money on it, I thought that I could, at least, use it as a social platform, since people here seem to be more reasonable, more normal, than many of those on other platforms.

But, again, even though I have had some great talks with some of the readers here, which I appreciate very much, there isn’t a broad set of people with whom I can talk – it is again the handful of supporters.

And that was, of course, my win on all this. Getting in touch with a handful of people with whom I could have meaningful conversations.

I have written and posted maybe 200 articles (or maybe more) on Substack, spread over the different stacks, and it means, in a way, that each of you have got 40 articles each. With an average length of 1,000 words per article, this means that I have written a short novel, 40,000 words, for each of you, exclusively :)

Isn’t that great?!

Which other platform could call for so much engagement that I would consider doing that? But here, it has been a pleasure.

The first post was a first. I had put several things into one post, believing that this was what was expected from a “newsletter”. It really was very new for me, even though I had had the first stack for a long while, maybe a year or more, just without using it.

It looked like this (but with a different logo back then):

Somehow, however, a platform like this one doesn’t enjoy having me here. 13 likes on the first post, that’s quite good, but it never got much higher than that, and the first readers quickly vanished again.

I tried to be active and read, like, comment, etc., on several articles for each of those who visited my posts, but very few seemed to appreciate it, so, after a while, the reciprocity-model died out for me.

I tried getting into sharing recommendations, but very few returned with one when I recommended them. However, some did, and also some recommendations appeared at the others’ initiatives, so it worked somewhat, but not as I had expected.

And then, when we reached 10 months and everything looked like it was in a decline from an already low level, I decided to call it a day (see previous posts on this).

Looking around on the platform, and trying to use Substack’s search mechanism for people and stacks, reveals that people have come and gone by large. Very many stacks have 5–10 posts, with increasing intervals between them, and the last one was several years ago.

I thought, when I first started here, that it was because some people didn’t really want to write after all, or they had other obligations that took their time. But now I’m not sure about that. I believe that at least some, probably many, have felt that this was a hostile place.

I can see from the zero, one, or more rarely, two likes they have on their articles, and the complete lack of comments, that they didn’t manage to catch any attention at all. Often, they had a few likes on the first post, and then nothing after that. Perhaps Substack’s recommender-algorithm in play here, to help new writers get started.

You may have seen from some of my other posts, what I consider could be part of the explanation for some people becoming successful here, and others not. And it is not always a matter of how well they write. Sometimes, probably it is, but even the best written article in the world will get no likes if nobody knows that it exists.

For this, there is Notes. But Notes obviously works only for some people, not for all. It should be possible to write something there, or send a link to an article, and then see a number of reactions. But, for some of us, this just doesn’t happen. When the new statistics feature was made for Notes, I could see why: most had 4 impressions, or whatever it’s called there. Out of those, perhaps one had clicked on like, if I was lucky.

Nobody sees my posts on Notes, so it doesn’t matter what I write there: they wouldn’t know.

I have also mentioned that American society that rules the top position of most categories – the big names on Substack, who all have been invited, have been promoted, and even paid by Substack for being here. The dream about becoming popular on this platform is not real, and in particular not for those of us who are not already popular outside the platform, as this is something that seems to be noticed here, having a major impact on whether people want to read your posts or not.

Every single one of those top names earn millions on their writings here, and every single one of them wants extra money, from you, if you should be able to write a comment on their posts, which they’ll never read. None of them will ever read anything you wrote, anywhere. In fact, I believe that none of them actually are on the platform at all – they are just names, brands, being used to sell subscriptions.

All the rest of us are – with the words of Jeremy Clarkson, former host of the TV show Top Gear – plankton (this snipped taken from The Mirror), and even though he refers to protests (about getting fired from the BBC), it is still a quite good way of seeing some details of how a society works, including Substack:

Clarkson said: "The simple truth of the matters is this: Protest never works. Because we are all plankton.

"And the world is run by whales. Oh, you can be a big and important plankton but that doesn't make a jot of difference if a whale has decided to eat you up.

"You can get a million other plankton to dress up and wave banners but Mr Whale won't even notice."

Well, that was a status.

Going forward, as I have mentioned in the previous post, with the little goose pictured, I am writing mostly within some specific topics, and I honestly don’t expect that anyone cares. I have become very negative toward the possibilities of this platform, so I am simply just publishing there, on the new stacks, instead of keeping the writing at home, on my own computer only.

I know that some of what I write will be blocked and banned by most Americans, who really do not seem to be able to handle anything that could rock their boat. But I write it anyway – not to insult or scare anyone, but because I find that it is important for people on this planet to be able to talk about certain topics, for instance such as the world, as we know it, being in the process of going under.

It may be unpleasant to think about, but it can end up becoming a lot more unpleasant if nobody thinks about it.

Many people prefer to be entertained by something they have already seen before in their life, many times. Perhaps the reason for TV-series being so popular? Or other kinds of repeated shows on TV. If there is nothing new, the world feels like it is still the same old world. That may be a comforting feeling, especially if you at the same time rule out any news sources, and make sure to block anyone on the Internet that potentially could say something that isn’t just the same as you always hear.

I cannot change that attitude to life. And I don’t think that I want to, either. Some people really need that abstraction from real life more than they need to know what is going on. And here, of course, the Matrix cliché fits in: some people really don’t want to know what the world really looks like, so they take that pill (I have forgotten which color) that keeps them in the illusion, rather than the one that will take them out of it.

But…

If there are any people out there, and it is possible, somehow, to get in touch with them, with whom I can talk about human rights, the environment, and some of the other topics I care about – some people who are ready to engage in at least gaining an understanding of some of the big questions of today – then I would like that. And I wouldn’t know, if I kept my articles at home without publishing them.

Hence, my new stacks.

After a few days of downtime, thinking about life and the meaning of it all, including writing, Substack, and the millions of consumers of the writing, I ended up trying out something I had been considering.

It has now resulted in a few new Substacks, each focused on a topic.

So, you can pick the topics you are interested in and subscribe to them individually – isn’t that just as flexible as it gets? ;)

Some of you will know from my writing so far, that I tend to mix two opposite trends in my writing:

1. Being brave and bold and talking about what I think matters

2. Hiding some of the deeper meaning between the lines

This is me, sorry. I think and write this way.

Telling all the details straight out often scares away people who don’t agree, no matter what it is about. The wish to learn new things is not strong with most people – they like the known space more than the new and untested territory.

But convoluting everything in clichés and politeness isn’t very satisfactory for the one who feels that he has something to tell. Because, telling requires that someone is listening, and preferably also understanding, otherwise telling makes no sense.

The new Substacks help a bit on this, in that I will be more straight in my message, which will always be about the one topic of that Substack, but also more experimenting by adding some thinking that is not fully developed yet, essentially asking you for your help to bring it into a state where it is good and useful.

I ask for active listening. This is not TV. I am not making movies. I am talking to people, hoping for them to respond.

Of course, I know that I’m just a chicken, believing he can fly, and that may look pathetic at times. “Who does he think he is? Why not just stick to the proven topics, those that do not cause a conflict. And then putting pictures of flowers on the articles. I like flowers!”

Well, there are millions of such articles. For whatever reason, people never read the older ones, only what has been published just now, but they could, just as well, read the old ones if they want all the old stuff served over and over again.

On the other hand, even when trying to write about new thoughts, I am perfectly aware that millions of people before me have thought about the same things. It is really hard to be unique, but it is also unnecessary. The point is that the sweet spot lies in between the cliché articles and the new thoughts, taking in something unknown and trying to treat it by thoughts and words to become a new part of the known, sitting there at the edge of the known land, but becoming more familiar over time.

That others have found that bit of land before me doesn’t change anything, it is still new for me, needing a bit of time, thought, and love, to become a true element of the universe as I know it.

That’s the reason for writing about it.

Writing gives me a chance to turn the things around in the head, sometimes several times, and it provides a possibility to bring in other people’s thoughts as well.

I have learned a lesson from the past year, in that I know that I can’t expect anyone to read anything, and that the Notes feature is completely worthless for me, almost never bringing any kind of connection with people, or even just more readers. So, I just post in the new substacks when I want, about what I want, and I understand that 99.999999% of Internet readers don’t care the least about it – most of these being on Notes.

I also understand that nobody ever reads the old articles. As mentioned, I don’t understand why, as they are just as good as the new ones, but that’s just how it is. So everything I write until subscribers start appearing will never be read by anyone.

Nobody ever looks at the front page of the Substack. This time around, I’ll therefore not spend time trying to design it nicely. That would be a complete waste of time.

What a weird place it is, this internet!

Environmentality

About the nature and everything in the part of the universe that affects our lives or provides a frame for us to exist. It is mostly about trees and animals, but also about pollution, energy, and other aspects by which we humans are in touch with the environment, for better or for worse.

I focus on the way we think about it all, hence the title and its hint to mentality. You will probably not see many scientific reports from me here, but rather such articles that emphasize an emotional treatment of this topic, that logically resides in our reptile brain, being totally essential to our survival.

Free World Dream

As it is written on the tin, it is about freedom, all aspects of it, from all over the world, and I am fully aware that freedom often is a dream, only. I want people to convert that dream to a goal, and then to reality. And I believe that we can do that together. Because, as I like to say, freedom must be given, it cannot be taken. If nobody treats us as if we are free, then we aren’t. We must give this to each other.

I got tired at one time of the school teacher’ish articles all over the Internet that tried to tell people why it couldn’t be true that the Earth was flat, even though some people claimed that it was, and no, Clint Eastwood isn’t a robot, he is a real human, and here is the evidence…

To me, knowing the world is not about true or false. It is not about debunking myths or revealing lies. It is about using every opportunity to think, and from that, to learn something. And your thoughts are the important ones here, not the school teacher’s.

So, I decided to deal with a bunch of these factoids, truisms, or unscientific thoughts, whatever you prefer to call them, through some short articles that introduce various thoughts about them. You can then, as the reader, continue the thinking and decide what you want to about the factoid itself. Hopefully, your thinking will bring you off track and let you consider something completely different as well.

The Complete World of Music

Some of you have noticed that I am very fond of music. I understand that not everybody is, and having a separate Substack for articles about that topic will therefore be a bliss for those who can then avoid it, and perhaps a pleasure for those who would like to follow it.

I am treating this Substack differently from all others – and in fact, differently from any blog or website I have ever administered before, in that it has a manuscript! All articles will fit into one, big story, covering everything about music, hence the title.

These different articles will not be published in the same order as you would find them in my manuscript, though. I work with many sub-topics in parallel, and I generally publish an article when it is ready, no matter where in the bigger story it fits.

Some day into the future, the date is not set, I hope that all of this together will become a good basis for that book about music, I find missing in the market, and then I will put that book together and publish it.

I have always been good at giving advice. Many people have lifted themselves up by the help of what I could tell them about life and what matters, what doesn’t.

And now, to the cliché, you are waiting for: I am miserable at advising myself.

Of course, this is what people always say. Maybe I should have advised myself to not say it, but this is, genuinely, what I feel right now.

If you have read any of my posts about social media, then you should know that I am not overly excited about that concept, as it has unfolded over the years. Substack falls into that category, so why am I here?

I have no good answer to that question, but I can see that one of the good, old pieces of advice I have always given to others now applies to myself too: that they should ensure to balance things so that they do as much that gives them energy as what takes energy – at the end of the day, they should end up being enriched by the things they did that day, all-in-all.

The sum of plusses and minuses should end up in a plus.

Currently, Substack, along with all other media – not just social media – drains me for energy.

I attempt in several ways to talk to people about important things, and even though there are some who respond now and then, I feel the burden of the many who don’t.

Too many minuses.

As my life isn’t offering me many (or any) plusses currently, despite my serious hunt for those, I am now out of energy and initiative and have to take my own advice and stop some of the drains, including Substack.

While I can live with disagreement, I can’t live with getting no response at all from the world on things that matter to me.

Maybe it would have been better, if there had been another source of thought-exchange that I could bid into, like friends I could meet now and then and with whom I could talk about the world. Or, at least some kind of balanced treatment of the big questions of today in the existing media.

Or, as a last resort, just the knowledge of there being at least some people in the world who still behave rationally and are able to balance all that happens into sound considerations and actions.

But there isn’t any of all that, and looking for it but not finding it takes all my energy.

I see only a big minus at the end of each day.

So, it is not about writing, it is about trying to get into a dialog with the world about the writing. And that simply doesn’t happen to a large extent.

My solution, for now, is to pull the plug – and keep writing, but for myself.

As I hate seeing each day how nobody read anything I published, and as I’m not successful with just not checking, I will close down my activities on Substack, like this:

1. Each site will, for a start, be made private. This means that new subscribers can ask, I’ll get an email, and then I can decide if they can subscribe. Existing subscribers will not be affected.

2. Chats will be closed

3. I’ll stop both writing to and reading from Notes

4. I’ll not publish anything to any of the sites

5. I’ll after a while stop checking for comments, and ultimately stop answering them – and then switch off comments altogether

6. I may, after some considerations, remove all the stuff from here. Then, perhaps I can publish some of it somewhere else, if I can start believing that people will read it there instead.

As I have paid for the domain names, I don’t want to close the sites completely, in case I should later want them back, therefore they’ll stay, but without activity.

I have made no decision for the future further ahead – maybe I’ll come back, maybe with a new name and a new style, being a fake person, such as it is liked by most. I may even start teaching you how to grow your substack! But just now I haven’t decided on anything.

Since there are literally millions of other sites and just as many other publishers here on Substack, there shouldn’t be any reason for anyone feeling that they are losing anything. And I’ll have peace of mind when writing just for myself, not needing to even think about who might want to read it or not.

So, starting with this site, circling around to the others over a few days.

And, just for the record, I do know that a few people here actually did support me, perhaps reading more of my stuff than they wanted to, just to make me happy, and I am forever thankful for that.

Some make it big! On Notes, you’ll often find posts from people who began writing, for the first time ever, 20 minutes ago, and now they have 20,000 subscribers and are number 1 or 2 in all categories.

It is hard to decode what makes them that big, as they are mostly writing about all and nothing, in one mix, but they all claim that consistency is what matters. And they all want to tell you how to do like them (only for paid subscribers, of course).

Well, there are also the real successes, and there are many of them. They keep collecting more subscribers, and they get many reactions on anything they publish, be it articles or notes.

But we who live on the other side, the modest ones, are not really taking off.

We get a new subscriber now and then, but others leave, so the total is a very slow progression in that number. As for the articles, it can look even worse, as most of these will have 3 likes and one comment, if they are doing well. Some will have more, but the occasional one will have less.

Notes is a complete disaster for most of us modest ones: many posts there will get no reactions at all, and the occasional one will have 5 as a high number of likes, but questions asked are not answered, requests to share links neither, so it doesn’t feel like anybody really want us there.

We do get a response in many cases when commenting on the popular guys’ and girls’ posts, but just the one response from the posters themselves, not from anyone else.

We are the almost invisible and completely unneeded people there.

While being happy for the connection to a few great people who often or perhaps just now and then take a look at something I wrote in an article, I also feel a lot of the time that I wouldn’t be missed by many if I would stop writing here.

This place certainly doesn’t have an echo at the size of the Internet, where millions of servers all the time take in likes and comments from eager participants in the many discussions initiated by the many popular people.

This whole thing reminds me of several other situations in life where I feel the same, such as in my current job search – even though the companies aren’t inviting me for interviews, I can almost feel they dismay at the distance, when they see my application and quickly conclude that they really don’t care what I can do or which experience I have: I’m not 25, newly graduated and good-looking, so they don’t want me there.

The job market speaks about equal opportunities and how much they want applications from all kinds of people, to reflect the surrounding society. But it is all crap, because they never hire any of these “diverse” people, except for a single one now and then, so that they can show a smiling, diverse face in their annual report, to tell the story about how much they do for the local society.

And the Internet is similar. There should be room for all of us, and the main driver in this should be a wish and some skills to write and to keep entertaining others with the writing. And having done that for the majority of the life of the Internet (for 30 years or so), I can now tell that it is also crap. Here, on the Internet, all the same sorting mechanisms are in place as in the job market.

I keep thinking about Liza from The Simpsons, who in one episode studied why some people always became the victims of bullies, and her conclusion, that nobody wanted to hear, was that “It’s their scent! - The victims smell in a special way that the bullies can’t resist, so the latter just have to bully them!”

I believe that this scent is in my emails with job applications, and it travels with the articles and posts I write and publish on Substack as well.

For the same reason, what I actually had in mind with this article, to provide a questionnaire for you all to get a chance to tell what kinds of contents you would like to see and something about the frequency, the size, and the decorations (own photos vs. stock photos, for instance – or would you like to see my home-knitted socks?) – will not happen. My scent would ensure that the replies would be biased, and I want to avoid that.

Instead, I would ask anyone who has the wish to help me get to the bottom of the problem, to tell a few words in the comments about what they enjoy reading, and what they don’t. If you can add links to other articles that are particularly good or bad – those written by others, in particular, to get inspired from – it will be extra great.

With this, I will see how I may be able to improve things. I would probably need to carry a fully covering protection suit, like they use in laboratories, when writing, going forward. Not to protect me, but to protect the articles from being infected with my scent that makes them unsuccessful. To protect the articles from me.

Looking forward to hearing from you – and growing this place into the teddy bear that all the children would like to have, and which would no longer be in the hands of the most modest success on the Internet. A scent-less joy of reading, full of not me.

It is strange how life on a social medium is moving all the time. Thinking back just a month or two, everything was different.

Of course, there are the measures, telling about numbers of people and the number of times they are doing different things, and such numbers are accumulating endlessly, but at varying speed.

But also the features available on the platform, and how they are used – how I use them – change.

An example: I posted a note that was just a silly joke, and it became my all-time smash-hit of a viral post on Substack Notes:

Yes, you see it right: 11 likes!

Most other notes get zero or just one, or maybe a couple. I have been told many times that I should just keep posting, then the readers will come. I have tried out different kinds of contents, both serious, thoughtful, funny, and silly.

I even tried changing my time zone through VPN, thinking that the system may have a preference for people from the USA (as it could seem from the many popular posts from there), but with no result.

An attempt to be informative and scientific turned out like this:

I had thought that it could lead to a talk about what works and what not, but no. Even a Merry Christmas went unnoticed:

Yet, my stream is full of notes like this one, often telling something like “this is my first post, I’m completely new here”:

She does look cute and has healthy interests, and a nice photo is always popular. But she starts at a higher level, I must say. 710 likes, so far. I guess that if she keeps posting, she will reach the sky.

I will not here and now bring more examples, but it seems like the concept of Notes is a tricky one. Personally, I don’t want to spend much time on it, as it doesn’t seem to have any real effect on my engagement here: nobody starts subscribing or telling me important things as a result of my notes, except for the few great people who do show me that attention – and who I appreciate a lot.

Now, my own posts are one matter, the posts of others – another:

I was one of the first to reply to this catching story about the price of shoelaces, and it just keeps bringing in likes, shares, and comments.

I don’t see the point of posting something like this, and it doesn’t bring me subscribers either, so I will not go that way very often. Perhaps, if I feel lonely and want to talk to someone, and I don’t want to talk to the wall of my own notes, then I can simulate some social activity through a reply like that.

During the last couple of months, I created some accounts on Bluesky, hoping that they could help attract some attention to my publications on Substack.

It doesn’t really work as I hoped for, but I didn’t believe in it anyway, so that’s as expected. They did, however, get high rankings on a Google search, meaning that they help drag attention to my company website – which was the original reason for creating a newsletter on Substack. So somehow the full circle of things help each other to work.

One very strange thing happened on Notes! I posted a question about integration with Bluesky, and a few days later, there were suddenly menu items for this! Not exactly as I had asked for, but still – some coincidence! And maybe only that, but I like to imagine that at least the Substack staff has read my post, if nobody else:

Well, all-in-all, Notes is crap.

There is no value in it for me, as it doesn’t give me anything, and it doesn’t allow me to give anything to others. A complete waste of time and resources. But as I do want to talk to other people and hear their thoughts, I tried out the Substack Chat.

Through each of my two publications, All of Life and Turning Life, I introduced a new chat, and I was happy to see that several people actually took part in the chat!

As if this wasn’t enough, I also got a response to a previous attempt, on the Chat of my Data Analytics publication.

The topics of the three chats were:

• Notes and Chat

• AI

• Statistics

All chats took place during the last few days, so it has been a chatty week for me ;)

And they are still open for more comments.

I have set up the pubs so that Chat works for all subscribers, but not for non-subscribers. I hope that this helps in making it feel more relevant and even safe to take part in it.

And I can’t stress enough how happy I am to see that it works! That there are real reactions from real people with thoughts and lives that they are open to talk about. It changes Substack from being a cold outlet of articles into being a real social space.

This, of course, together with the occasional comments and chats that appear on each article, but I still feel that Chat has a potential for deeper conversations.

So, this has come to stay. I plan to not over-do it, and perhaps a new chat each week or so will be appropriate, on each of the two pubs about life.

I have set up things so that only I can start chats, so please just suggest a topic if you have one (direct message or a comment on one of my posts will work). If it seems wanted, and safe, I may later decide to open for everyone to be able to start a chat.

From the owl you sent me by answering the questions asked in this forum, I found that:

1. You want less different topics

2. You want fewer articles per week

3. You want something that works on both web and mobile

None of this was 100% agreed between the responders, even though there were just a few responses, so I will try to not implement it all too strict.

From the history of Substack and the construction of the most popular stacks here by people who were already famous writers before Substack was invented, it could look like one topic, and daily, long, often very long, articles will be the way forward.

However, there are some problems with following this “popular practice” – since it isn’t the norm at all on Substack. These VIPs were invited, many of them were paid to show up, have been given various kinds of help to build a solid presence here, simply because Substack wanted some success stories to show the world.

So, these people do here what they already did elsewhere, and their fans from wherever they have been writing before (or maybe still do) have simply followed them here.

Other popular stacks are by journalists who were basically made redundant by the decline in the news media business over the last several years, now bringing their talents, often with the same form of expression, to Substack, doing consistently what they are known to do well.

None of these people are me.

As a writer, I have moved around various topics. Started my writing career as a child by writing songs, later humorous articles, cooking recipes, poems, and many other things, until I had a period with lifestyle topics like lighting, porcelain, music, and photography. Along all of this were technical writing, both as manuals, etc., and as occasional broader scoped articles about how things work. And I have written about leadership during the last maybe 10–15 years, plus occasional philosophical articles — and more.

This is me.

My way of thinking and writing is circling around many topics, which again is based on a holistic world-view where I always see connectedness between the various elements of life. The connections are life. The elements are just anchoring points for them. Life is movement, variety, and evolution.

The new plan

What I have learned must be obeyed! I must be true to my self while still trying to deliver something that makes sense for the audience — you.

So, I have ended up making a split: A Rich Life is now two substacks, of which one is the direct continuation of it, now called All of Life, with its mix of short and long, deep and light, transparent and opaque thoughts of all kinds, while the other, Turning Life, is more focused with closer-to-streamlined opinionated long-form articles that will develop in the direction of a more typical journalistic approach, as time and skills allow, and dealing with a defined set of topics.

All of Life is the outlet of the most creative stuff, sometimes to be found a bit silly or even primitive by some, at other times experimenting in a rather complex fashion. And everything in-between. It is about life as we experience it, feel it, about events and the odd phenomenon “now”. Not based on any fixed ideas of right and wrong.1 Not fully predictable in its contents, nor in its publication frequency.

Turning Life is the place for order and a strict focus on the world as it develops, looking at changes in time and space, in what we see and what we think, over some years. It is history and sociology more than anything else, but with psychology and politics included, as well as life philosophies and religions where they seem to affect the development of the world.

Turning Life will approach a fixed publishing schedule, where each of the topics treated (represented and grouped by Substack sections) of one article per topic each month. There can be an extra article now and then, especially if a guest writer can add something interesting that seems to supplement more than replace what was otherwise planned.

This means about 5–6 articles per month plus an occasional extra. A digest will be made at the end of the month, describing what was published and (to be implemented along the way) also describes what is planned for the next month.

I plan to award a “Person of the month” on a monthly basis, letting this be an opportunity to pick up some of the changes we face, represented by one person’s views and actions. This reward can be earned for both positive and negative reasons, meaning that the Person of the month is to be described, their ideas and actions equally so, and then any endorsement or appraisal will need to be added as fits, or the negative impact of what is described will be elaborated upon.

Turning Life is all about change, this way recognising the importance of seeing and understanding how life changes, rather than just being pushed around — because, only by understanding from where we came and where we are heading, we can create a small, free space in time that we can call “now”, in which we can then live and thrive.

Otherwise, we will always be on the way to something else that we don’t know what is, always stressed, always having our thoughts in some other time, some other place. We will then not be living a rich life.

Monetisation

This I have attempted already, but I realised that I was doing it wrong, as I have described earlier.

The new idea is to look at Turning Life as a project that should lead to switching on the paid subscription option — when I am happy with the shape and execution of the stack — to allow for dedicating more time to making the articles longer and more thorough. Additional larger feature articles plus other benefits for the premium subscribers may then be added.

All of Life may or may not get monetised. It will depend on the development in subscribers (and pledges) and ideas, as there should be some kind of reason behind offering something for money. The buyers should be there, and they should find it attractive to spend some money to get something extra. We’ll see how it goes with this.

I am still not one of the initial writing moguls who got solid help from Substack to get well established, and I still don’t have their impressively successful background, so any movement toward monetisation will no doubt become a lot more modest for my sites. But with a little luck, it will help me get to a point where I can dedicate a substantial part of my time to them.

Graphics and layout

I keep working on the visual appearance of the stacks, even though it is a bit up-hill, I think, especially when many of the improvements are invisible on the mobile app — which a significant part of the readers are likely to be using as their primary or only access to the stacks.

Nevertheless, for the benefit of those who can see it, I am trying to do some stepwise refinements of all graphical elements and other layouts, including text elements such as permanent pages and the selection and positioning of building blocks on the pages.

I will work a bit with the inner design of articles as well, such as vignettes and illustrations, and my plan is to move toward a situation where all graphics and photos will be home-made. That takes a while, since these are time-consuming activities, but it would be several steps better than stock photos and standard designs, I think.

A prosperous New Year

I wish you a happy New Year that will fulfil all your dreams or bring you closer to them — by understanding what exactly you dream about, or by actually reaching the dreams and your goals, whatever is the most relevant for you.

May we all read and write together during another year, share our thoughts and become bigger and stronger people by pouring our combined immense amount of wisdom into one big pool to dive into whenever we feel for it.

If you know the Harry Potter books or movies, you’ll know how messages are sent by owls. A great idea, and Rowling put this way a thought into her books that can’t escape my mind. Thinking of that beautiful animal whenever someone tells me important news makes me automatically feel humble – how could I ever disagree with anything told by such a clear-sighted creature?

What the owl brought me, through the survey of and the overall interest in last week’s Between Us, was a message of declining interest for my posts and a general wish to reduce the amount of them. To speed down a bit.

I guess, the owl prefers to watch for the fat and juicy mouse of the night, then catch that one to have a feast on it, rather than hunting all night for one after another of the meagre ones.

It makes sense, but it takes some serious turns of thoughts in my head to find that gear, rather than moving on at full speed non-stop.

There was a time in my young days when I wanted to be a sailor – steer a ship around the world. When doing that, there is no time ever where you are not a sailor – you cannot just sail a bit, then leave the boat on its own for a while, and then come back to steer it again. You must be there and pay attention to it day and night, somehow.

Steering through a writer’s career could be something similar, but it isn’t. It is not expected. Even in today’s attention economy where we all want to be seen all the time, we must, when we are writers, make pauses in the outflow. Writing unseen for a while, being unheard of, and then, pang!, shoot off the new success novel or whatever we have been working on. That is expected.

Another thing is the website. I cannot see, but I can sense, from the rather limited number of replies that there is limited interest in the shape of the website, and the added links and other stuff that I have put there – because, when using the mobile app, all this is invisible, and half of the responders use that app. It has a strict focus on the articles and not even in any kind of order I may try to arrange for them, simply just all articles lined up with the latest first.

I’m old-fashioned. I grew up with the Internet in a time when it was obvious that whatever you would do on it, you would also need to pay attention to the design, not just the text. But today, media apps take care of presenting things the way the programmers have decided, not the way you, as a writer and publisher, would have liked it. It’s a pity, I think, since much is lost this way. It is also a pity that a platform like Substack pretends to the writer that there are options for designing the reading experience, when this experience is, in fact, not there at all for that large group of readers who use the much promoted mobile app.

I’m old. Not just old-fashioned. I’m saying that because it has often been mentioned that the young people of today do not care. Simply. They get so much input that they do not care about any of it to a very high degree. It all just flows quickly over the mobile screen, to be forgotten the next moment. If they miss something, or a technical error occurs that will hide some of the text, they may not even notice. So little do they care. But I do care. I try to find the missing parts of the text, try to reload, try to enlarge pictures if they are difficult to see… I care too much about the details to fit into this new paradigm of “young”.

That all, being old-fashioned and old, means that even being strongly empathetic, understanding the drivers and the wishes, the dreams and motivations of people in general, doesn’t bring me enough of a clue to what to write and how to present it, how to bring it to the readers.

I do have the book by Mark Manson, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. It has been read by every young person in the world, I guess. It fits the bill, so to speak: “not caring” is exactly what the book is about, and the young people who do not care, like to hear that they are entitled to be like that.

I haven’t read all of the book, because, to be honest, I don’t see the point in using the word “fuck” ten times on each page, throughout a book. Like if the writer tries to get into the Guiness Book of World Records or something. Nevertheless, I get the message: Pick your battles. Don’t pay attention to everything in a world that offers too much to pay attention to. Say no a lot.

While I agree on saying no now and then, I don’t agree on the idea to never dive deeply into anything. Mark is not saying that, to be clear, but I feel that many people think this way. Living on the surface, surfing the waves without ever seeing what is inside of the ocean, under the surface – the fishes, clams, plants. Going home from a day on the beach with absolutely nothing but the memory of the adrenalin kicks, and a sunburn.

There is so much to dive into, so much to see for the one spending part of the time away from the surface. Even just sitting still on the beach, watching, can bring a lot of new experiences.

The owl, of course, didn’t say much about all that. I guess there are no owls on the beach? They have a different expectation to life, a different life altogether, a different world to live in. The world as described by an owl would be unrecognisable for a fish, I guess. And vice versa.

What I am trying to tell with all this is that in a world with 8 billion people of all ages, all levels of experience in various areas of life, all kinds of interestes, all kinds of needs, it is probably difficult for a writer to hit the buttons of joyful reading moments and life recognition, relatable situations, and interesting topics, in all readers.

Despite the few responses to the surveys, I still got a clear message – of the world not being clear. The world, just as I would have expected, is a bit blurry and doesn’t provide a way to see what will be popular, what will be enjoyable. In oter words: I cannot make a good plan for how and what to write and publish.

I just have to walk my way, the way I can. Seeing what is there. Writing about what makes sense to me. Putting mental images into words, and doing this as rarely or as often as I feel for it. And then everyone else on the planet can decide to read it or not.

Everyone can say no, can decide to not give a f*ck, and so can I. Or, when the conditions are right, we can take a dive together, exploring the oceans and find treasures there, knowledge and beauty. Or sit on the beach and monitor others doing it, letting them tell about their observations when they step out of the water. Or we can go to the forest, checking every now and then what news the owls may have for us.

That was the message I got. Beatiful owls bring wise messages that provide great insight, thought out and sent by valuable readers. Thank you!

Some of you may have noticed that I put a subscription on offer during the week, and then shortly after reconsidered and dragged the publication out of the monetization scheme altogether.

What’s the fuzz?!

That move was caused by something that I should have foreseen, as a certified social media manager, but which my excitement about this nice new platform (new for me) had made me not see, but which became clear when I found out how to read the site statistics:

Out of 116 subscribers, in fact, not all were really subscribers when it got to the point. They might be registered as such, but if they are not reading anything, they only act as subscribers without really being it.

Statistical details

During the last 30 days, 41 people have seen at least 1 article on A Rich Life. I cannot know if they have read all of it, but they have somehow seen it so that Substack could register it as seen.

• 15 of these had seen 1–2 articles

• 12 had seen 3–5 articles

• 14 had seen more than 5 articles

That is by itself very nice: having 41 unique readers during a month is more than many amateur writers can hope for after publishing for about three months on a platform where 20 million people publish regularly — there are many possible distractions, many alternatives.

But knowing that

• about 6% of the users of Substack will ever pay for a subscription to anything,

• and then at most for a few publications,

• and considering that most people have a free subscription to dozens or hundreds of publications already,

• and, not the least, seeing that only about 26 are regularly returning readers, the remaining 15 to be seen as rare readers,

leaves a very low chance for any of the active subscribers to A Rich Life to decide to buy a subscription — maybe 1% or lower.

The future could become brighter, but right now there are very small chances to sell any subscriptions at all.

The logical conclusion and decision

In order to spare all of us for the embarrassment of not facing the reality, I decided to cancel the operation and wait for a more optimal situation before trying again.

This was enforced by another thing, I should have foreseen: that some subscribers decided to unsubscribe immediately when I started talking about offerings and subscriptions.

Suddenly, the magic was challenged by reality — free was somehow threatened by a potential need for payment sometime in the future, and the spell was broken.

From the statistics, it is also possible to see that about half of the subscribers never read anything at all, and about the same number (but not exactly the same people) never opened an email with a newsletter.

The latter is to be challenged, as there seemingly are some problems for Substack with detecting if people open the emails or not, so the statistics are not accurate on this point.

One last thing I have noticed, is that lately, when I have published more than before (approx. one article per day), the number of readers of each article has dropped. Maybe I am overdoing it? Maybe it is better to reduce the output?

Now, I understand that only a few people will even see this article, let alone read it, and maybe some of the readers will decide not to answer the polls, so any input from the above will at best be indicative, but I still hope for some input :)

A whisper from the past

It feels so remote now. Just a distant memory. The time on Medium, I mean, writing often and enjoying the connection with people. Then, suddenly, it was lost. I had written about it for everybody to see and enjoy with me the abstract beauty:

Okay, a bit too abstract for some, but while writing it out of a genuine wish to celebrate how things were moving forward, feeling trust in the relationship, I clearly felt, by then, a snake in the paradise.

The new numbers remind me of the old, but nothing is really comparable. Only the potential fragility of it all. We cannot rely on a trustful atmosphere to last. I suppose that it takes two to tango, but still, life is not an eternal dance on roses.

The smile and friendly laughter of today

As always in social relations, it is difficult to predict every reaction to every move, and being social means being observant, adapting, trying things out and being prepared to adjust. Finding a common harmony. Creating a community, a common sense and way of thinking, to supplement the individuality that still must exist in order to keep the spark in the relationship alive.

Trying to make you smile. And think. Showing off a bit, now and then, trying to sound wiser than I am, just to get a moment of attention. But then being honest, explaining my shortcomings and giving room for you to feel valuable.

Laughing together, when something is funny — laughing when it is weird, even though not so funny, when thinking about it. But laughing for the reason of finding communality, the way that is ours, together. Friendly, as friends are.

One in a hundred is more than one in a million

The uniqueness in small circles of people is that we can get closer to each other. We can talk straight to anyone in the circle, no filters or hierarchies are needed, no permission to speak. We just speak — and listen when being spoken to.

Everyone is larger this way, allowed to grow even further by being heard and seen, by contributing and being remembered.

Growth is within. Giving room, making space, allowing you to fill that space, is growing all of us.

Still, we grow in many directions, are part of many circles, each of us.

We are the one in a hundred in some, the one in ten in others, and there are circles with just two. You and me. Or one. Room for solitude.

Each post is its own circle, a social event, a place, a time — a circle in the bigger circle of the publication, which itself is in the circle of the known universe, that part of the blogosphere that is called Substack and which you have seen. And this, again, a circle in the full universe of writing.

How great isn’t it that we can zoom in on the circle, the attention level, our mind just now has the capability or wish to focus on.

Forever evolving

Nothing stays the same. Even such an obvious measure as how I see Substack has changed. Not knowing for sure from the start what it was, even though I had heard a lot of it, I soon found out that whatever I did know — was wrong.

I thought it was a newsletter, email-based, with a possibility to read the newsletters online as well. As I had an account already for more than a year before I began writing here, I had noticed that subscribers would show up by themselves, and that I would be recommended other substacks when subscribing to one.

But the finer details in how people interact at Substack, making it a community more than a list of newsletters, that was new to me, something I have learned.

Also, the many dreams of becoming famous, gaining a huge followership and earning a lot of money, has turned out to be more outspoken here than I had expected. But in hindsight, I should have known. The paradigm of the Internet is like this now — about being someone there, not just using it.

The next thing to learn is in progress, for my part. I want to see if I can connect the different worlds I visit, the different social media, including Substack. In a subtle way, though, but what effectively stopped working on social media a while ago — the links between them — is still technically possible, so I want to see if putting a link to a Substack post on other media can make some people click on it, and read the article.

Internally, on Substack, there are about 20 million people I still don’t know — room for a lot more socializing :)

Looking forward to the next 3 months, the next 100 subscribers, the next 50 articles — and with you always being in the centre of everything, my reason for being here.

Since I started this substack, I have published somewhat uneven - some weeks many posts, other weeks none. There has been days with several posts and a long while, about a month, with no posts at all.

This is not optimal, even though all subscribers will probably just read something else if there is nothing from me — most of us subscribe to many substacks, and we may not think too much about the schedule for each of them; we just read what pops up in our inbox, or?

Well, I have noticed that some people prefer to find the articles on the substack page rather than in their inbox. It makes perfectly sense when subscribing to many substacks, as it can be quite overwhelming on some days to see the flood of articles ticking in.

For me, personally, it also makes sense to try to divide my time a bit between the different areas, rather than just following a flow into doing a lot of one type, then feeling exhausted for days, until I throw myself into another.

Even if I do get excited about something, I can just write several articles and then schedule them for publishing over the next several weeks, which will then free up some time for writing about other topics.

All these considerations, of course, as a result of being interested in many subjects :)

So, a rough schedule is going to look like this, at least for the rest of the year, with each week following the same template:

Mondays: The Social Game

Tuesdays: At Work

Wednesdays: Be Creative + open to guest posts, cross-posts, etc.

Thursdays: Book Stories + open to guest posts, cross-posts, etc.

Fridays: Fiction and poetry (The Neighbors, Fictitious Scripts, other stories when ready)

Saturdays: Rich Life

Sundays: Between Us

Please note that I may skip one or more of these subjects in a given week, depending on how much time I have for writing, and how many good ideas I have — and, of course, how much time each of the posts consumes before being good enough to publish.

Between Us is only published if there is something to tell - and this may also be needed during weekdays, in which case I will not wait until Sunday.

Short-term goals

I am experimenting a bit with the publishing times, currently settled on around 2:20 in the afternoon, Central European Time (this should be early morning on the US East Coast) – and two hours later during weekends.

But you may see me, now and then, publish at different times, because I want to find out what works best, measured by when the largest amount of reads and responses will appear shortly after publishing. I interpret this as being the most appropriate time for the most of the subscribers.

I try in general to avoid publishing on full and half hours, since most other substacks are published on such “clean” times — so, my post may drown in the flood of posts and not be read.

For the other substacks, Data Analytics, Technical Writing, and Technical Writing DK, I aim at getting into a rhythm of publishing one post on each per week before too long.

Long-term goals

I want to start bringing extra well-prepared contents to the premium subscribers as soon as I have something ready, and this may happen from the start of December, with a lot of luck, or perhaps more realistically from the beginning of next year.

I want to find out how I can make this substack a good experience for the subscribers, so there are chats, podcasts, perhaps videos, and other possibilities to play with, but I have no specific plans yet — only the goal to improve on the experience, so that around New Year and ahead, all people will be as happy as possible :)

In the longer run, working with the premium contents plus the good experience may take time from some of the now scheduled activities, so they will need to be reduced a bit. On the other hand, more topics may be introduced along the way, so you can expect some adjustments every now and then.

Nevertheless, I have moved A Rich Life to a custom domain that is connected to my company website. This way, things are gathered a bit more than before, and maybe Google can better index the articles now? I hope!

In general, I have seen recommendations in many places to use a custom domain, so here it is - if it doesn’t turn out to have any drawbacks, I will probably do the same for my other substacks.

Well, not much to tell about this, except that I can add that it was easy to do from a combination of the substack settings and the setting for the domain itself, which are at my page at the company that hosts the domain name. A bit of assistance from my credit card was also needed.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

This publication has been up and running for a couple of months now, featuring about 30 articles for close to 100 subscribers plus the occasional readers.

While I am not so much focused on the exact numbers, the statistics, of this publication, I am still happy to see that articles often get around 10–20 reactions — likes, comments, restacks, and shares — meaning that I am indeed writing for real people who read my articles.

Life is interesting! That’s obvious, seeing how the topic has become that popular. We can talk about many things, but the human being and its thoughts and actions is a central topic that all we humans can relate to.

Between Us

At this point in time and in the development of the publication, I find it reasonable to introduce this meta level of writing, the Between Us section, where the publication itself can be mentioned in no particular format, just kept in a colloquial tone for discussing various thoughts.

Maybe this looks more like a traditional newsletter, while the rest of the stuff in here has become articles and stories — a format that I find more appropriate, after having experimented a bit, than the original idea I had, which was to put 1–3 text elements in each newsletter. These could be short stories, poems, a photo reportage, or whatever, but circling around a common topic and with surrounding text to bind it all together.

What I have learned is that readers of anything on substack are very diverse and like to read all kinds of things, but most seem to expect exactly one story in each post.

Several newsletters

Also, there is no 1-to-1 relation between the publication and the newsletter — from the start, I wasn’t really sure how this all worked, but it looks like it is more appropriate to talk about each section of the publication to be a newsletter: You can switch on or off email notifications for each of them separately, but you can still read all the posts on the publication website.

This is a good concept, even though it may be a bit tricky to find out how to switch on and of each of the newsletter. You can do it while watching a post on the website (using a web browser): Click on the Dashboard down-arrow and select Manage subscriptions.

This will open the administration page for your subscription to this publication, and on that page there is a block of switches for all the things you can get notified about. Feel free to pick and choose, so that your subscription gives you exactly what you want:

Each of the sections/newsletters can also be found in the menu line on the publication website, and at least some of them will have a feature section down the page, for inspiration and easy access.

All of this organizing is of course done with the idea that some of the readers might want to read older posts, not just the latest, and this seems to be a very pleasant feature of Substack readers.

Social media in general tends to scroll posts into oblivion within a day or so, after which very few people will read it. Medium let the post have an active life for a few days, but then it ends. Substack, however, and the wonderful users and readers here, do not mind a post being several weeks old - if it is there, it can be read.

So, I find that it makes sense to arrange for all the posts to be easy to find.

More topics

Since starting the publication, it has spread to several sub-topics, as visible from the notifications list above. Some topics are out of scope for the publication, and therefore I have made a few additional publications. These are mainly meant to support all the things I do for work, so that clients and prospects can see what I do, but also for everybody else to read, who are interested in the topics.

They are all in their beginnings, but I intend to add more contents to them soon, making each of them a good place to look for information about their respective topics.

One is about data analytics, which was one of the topics I got involved with early in my career - all about registering, finding, combining, and analysing data, and making sense of them, bringing it all into a readable and understandable form, often for an organization’s management to use in their planning, but really, it could be for anyone. Another is about technical writing and translation, which have sneaked into my life along the way but during recent years have become what I live from, mainly. Technical writing is different from creative writing in that it usually has a very specific purpose — to instruct someone, give guidelines, or describe some facts.

There are many kinds of technical writing, and in the common understanding of it, it stretches from manuals over study reports to everything that is to be used in a technical context, such as labels, captions, and other texts in an app or on a website.

While I am very happy to write creatively, I also have a sense of structuring and getting an overview of things, and this is, in fact, the same skills that I use for data analytics, and, sometimes, for creative writing as well. So they all go well together.

There is a special publication as well, also for technical writing and translation – but it is in Danish language. Most of my clients are in Denmark, and I am myself from there, knowing the language as my mother tongue, so it seems obvious to support the Danish speakers in my professional network with some articles about the topic.

One of my main reasons for joining Substack was to wean myself off exploitative social media platforms. I’m hoping this is going to help move us along on that journey!

Sherman Alexie wants to create a kind and creative new space in Notes.

I’m going to focus on being positive, with my own thoughts and photos and by linking to songs, stories, poems from around the web and from other Substacks.
