Jorgen, this is interesting. Especially your thoughts on expectations and thanks. I also do wonder if the problem is the Like feature itself. It was created by Facebook for, well, photographs. And it was immediately at the bottom of the photo. Now readers have to scroll through entire pages before deciding to like or not—which is a big ask. I think it’s OK, I just think that feature needs to evolve. Great read!

Thank you. I think you are right – during the years with like features, they have been seen in different places, also at the very top of the post. On Medium, you can (or could, when I last used it) like something (called clapping there) already on the overview page, i.e., without even opening the post.

When it is more convenient, people may use the like feature more, but do they then mean it as much as when it is inconvenient? What is the value of a like under each of these circumstances?

And yes, features evolve, and they probably have to, to make everything fit a bigger picture of usability and purpose. I just feel that many social media platforms are clearly scaring users away now, with the increased focus on telling rather than communicating.
