Thanks. Well, life is there, no matter what you do - you can just as well like it and work with it as it is, since this is, in fact, the only option :)
Additional pieces of truth - as the algorithms of social media are ever-changing, so has it also changed on Medium since I write this. It is not clear exactly what has changed, but some writers (including myself) have seen a total decline of reads of their articles on the platform - others experience extreme amounts of reads. Something has been reshuffled, whatever it is.
For contents here on Substack, there are algorithms in play as well, in contrary to what many seem to believe:
Substack is placing your article in suggestion lists in at least two places 1) announced at the top of Notes, and 2) picking your substack (or not) when someone subscribes to another substack, which other substacks from their recommendations list should be proposed to the new subscriber.
In theory, also Google's algorithms are in play for substacked contents, but I have not seen any inflow of readers from Google, so it may be that Google simply blocks contents from here? Or maybe it just ranges very low there, so it isn't anywhere near the top of the search results. I could imagine that the latter may be the case, given Substack's somewhat tainted reputation for allowing all kinds of contents, which is not Google's cup of tea.
And, finally, other social media, such as LinkedIn, seem to hate links out of their platform in general but to Substack in particular - if you try posting just a link to one of your articles here, you'll see what I mean: it will get close to no visibility. As a mix with some other contents, it may be a bit more blurry, but having a link to Substack is definitely being punished.
Thank you! I think that whenever games are played, it makes sense to be aware that this is the case. Otherwise, it will be the others playing games behind your back. Knowing what is going on will at least help making knowledge-based decisions.
I especially liked the Postscript. I don't know how you manage to make me feel good about scammers and bots, but you have a gift with words.

I'm going to share this with everyone who asks me about why their posts don't get more readers.
Much needed truth bomb right here!
