I didn't know sanatoriums, in the way you present them, were still a thing. Is this a private endeavor? A government sanatorium? I always thought it made sense. For starters, being at sea level lowers blood pressure, and the humidity can help in all sorts of ways. I noticed this back when I was struggling with a bunch of sinus issues and hypertension and suddenly got better when at the beach. And so many of our diseases are either caused or heightened by stress that retreating to a quieter place is just common sense, honestly. I wish this was a widespread practice.

There are so many good things in life, and most of them are mostly forgotten when we talk about our needs and wishes. When looking around, carefully, in a society where people interact with each other, we can see how very many things are being done for each other. I have no statistics, but I could imagine that maybe 99% of all the things that happen in our lives are somehow done for us by others.

But it is so easy to forget. We focus on commanding or hiring one particular person when we need something, to fix it for us, but we forget that most of what such one can do will be at a superficial level, since he or she isn't close to us, isn't part of the life in which we need things done. Friends and neighbors can often do a lot more, as a natural thing.

I have a theory on this: When people are in a life situation where they do not have a network of people around them - when they are lonely - then there are very many things that will not work well in their lives. For that reason, success is much easier to obtain if you have a network of people who can do all those little things for you as these old ladies in the story are doing for each other. Simple things, but life consists of simple things.

Apart from people - you are saying something important about blood presure and stress. Simple means can reduce both, and this is so health-improving that we really all should seek to do this often. A stay by the sea is in this category, as you mention, and many other things. Perhaps a game of card with some new or old friends? Many things.

My stories about the neighbors (and their world) is based on real life, but I put them in some surroundings that allow me to stress a topic for each episode. So don't think too hard on where such a sanatorium may be situated, as this is not really the point, it is simply a stage for the story activities to take place in a comprehendible way.

I thought it might have been a literary device, but you're good and you tricked me. 😜

Or, perhaps, it's wishful thinking. I guess I kind of want to think there's still space in the world to retreat and regroup.

You make a great point about the importance of community. A while ago, I read a statistic about why people still go to church, and a bunch of people (I don't remember the exact number) acknowledge why they like the community. There is a lot of power in giving and accepting help from others.
